LEFT—This was a wonderful image captured during the shoot. RIGHT—This image was shot when her parents brought her into the studio afterward, when she fell asleep in a chair during our consultative sales session. They are both lovely images, but the angelic feel of this image really captured something for me.
Parents’ Personalities. Another factor to consider is the formality or casualness of the clients who are commissioning the work (Mom and/or Dad). While it is true that many of the clients who are drawn to the contemporary look are a bit more easygoing about location, you will still find that some are very concerned about the possibility of inclement weather or particularly sensitive to strangers on location who may be watching the shoot. They may also have concerns about the distance from a potty if their child isn’t consistent in that realm. It may be going great with the little ones, but if Mom is tense it will come across in the family images and eventually bleed into the children’s attitudes as well.
Do a Reality Check. Learning more about your clients and their preferences can provide a great deal of information that is vital when choosing the location of the shoot. You also have to be realistic, though, and do your homework (and legwork). There are some things you can ignore in an environment and other things that are going to hurt the overall look and feel of the imagery no matter what you do. A large field of poppies might sound like a fantastic location, but if you are dealing with bugs, muddy terrain, and no natural shading, it might end up being a pretty terrible site for a children’s portrait session.
